Players control their own characters, but character actions still have reasonable in-game consequences.

Consent and Consequences

  1. You may not kill, seriously injure, permanently alter, or take control of another player's character without their permission.
  2. Likewise, you may write what your character attempts to do, but you may not dictate another character's reaction or the outcome without prior agreement.
  3. Permission-based play does not mean characters are immune to consequences. If your character takes an action, other characters and the game world may reasonably respond to it. A character seriously wounded on Tuesday will not be charging into battle on Wednesday as though nothing happened.
  4. For major planned conflicts between characters, we strongly recommend discussing the situation OOC beforehand. This helps everyone distinguish intentional in-character contention from problems between players. Never use IC conflict to settle an OOC disagreement.
  5. If a player disappears without notice, the Game Manager may move or sideline their character as described under GM Godmodding.

Activity

Aereth does not conduct mandatory activity checks.

If you're involved in an active plot and need to step away, let your writing partners or GMs know.

Character Limits

Aereth has no character limit. Create as many characters as you can reasonably manage.

We recommend getting your first character approved and into play before creating additional characters.

Magic

Aereth is a magical world, but magic does not make a character invincible.

All magical abilities must comply with the Magic Rules and be documented in the character's approved bio. Abilities cannot be invented during play simply because a character needs them.

Magic is also subject to Aereth's normal consent and godmodding rules.

For permitted abilities, limitations, prohibited magic, and how magic works on Aereth, see the Magic and Aereth.

Chapter 4: Bad Roleplay https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/4/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/4/ Tue, 11 Aug 2026 21:19:02 +0000 In a nutshell: DON'T DO IT!

Bad roleplay interferes with collaborative storytelling or with another player's ability to control their own character.

Godmodding

Do not make your character unrealistically powerful or invulnerable, control another player's character without permission, or dictate the outcome of an action that involves another player's character.

You may write what your character attempts to do. Unless agreed upon beforehand, the other player determines how their character responds and what effect the action has.

GM Godmodding Exception

The Game Manager and her minions reserve the right to move a character when necessary because the player has stopped responding.

We'll do this as non-intrusively as possible and avoid assigning thoughts, emotions, dialogue, or unnecessary actions to the character.

If a player becomes unresponsive without giving notice, the Game Manager will make one attempt to contact them. If there's no response, the character may be sidelined or moved out of the current plot using reasonable, non-lethal actions.

If the same situation happens again after the player returns, the Game Manager may simply sideline the character without another warning.

Once sidelined, it is the player's responsibility to find an appropriate way for the character to rejoin the story or move into another plot.

Life happens — including in the middle of an active thread. Just communicate with us. Send a message through the Aereth website, DM us on Discord, or post in the Absences OOC forum. We're happy to work with you.

And yes, this applies to the GM too. If she disappears, a minion can move her character out of the way. All's fair, after all.

Metagaming

Characters may only act on information they could reasonably know in-game. Player knowledge is not automatically character knowledge.

Other Bad Roleplay

  • Ignoring Character Traits: Keep your character reasonably consistent with their established personality, abilities, motivations, and limitations.
  • Loner Syndrome: Give other characters something to work with. Characters can be solitary, difficult, or antisocial without making collaborative writing impossible.
  • Excessive Character Whomp: Don't constantly injure, sicken, or traumatize a character simply to generate attention. If it contributes to character development or the story, have at it. If every Tuesday brings another near-death experience, ease up.

Chapter 3: Mature Content Policy https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/3/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/3/ Tue, 11 Aug 2026 21:06:02 +0000 Aereth’s Age Restriction

The Aereth RPG is rated 18+ for occasional mature content and you must be at least eighteen years old to join the site. Players are responsible for marking their threads and posts as mature if they feel the content is not appropriate for readers under the age of eighteen.

Per the RPG Rating System, our rating is 322.

Please see the Prohibited Content section below for details on the mature content limitation.

Guidelines

Viewing Mature Content

You must…

  1. Be a registered member.
  2. Have your birth date listed in your profile. This may be set to private.
  3. Enable Mature Content in your profile settings.

Directions are available in the Account Registration guide.

To Write Mature Content

When writing graphic violence, sexually explicit language, or sexually explicit scenes, you must…

  1. Have your birth date listed in your profile. Only GMs will be able to see it.
  2. Have Mature Content enabled in your profile settings.
  3. Mark the post as Mature using the toggle at the bottom of the editor.

Minor Characters & NPCs

Children and teenagers are a normal part of Aereth's world and may be written as characters or NPCs. They may participate normally in family life, friendships, adventures, political events, and other appropriate storylines.

However, Aereth does not permit the graphic portrayal of sexual content, sexual abuse, torture, or other extreme violence involving characters or NPCs under eighteen.

Such events may exist as part of the setting or a character's history when necessary to the story, but references must remain vague and non-graphic.

Prohibited Content

Although Aereth is rated 18+ and loosely resembles a medieval period, there are some subjects we simply don't want portrayed graphically in the game.

These situations may exist in Aereth's world or a character's history, but only vague references or implications are permitted.

  1. Sexual Content Involving Minors: Do not write sexually explicit scenes involving characters or NPCs under eighteen.
  2. Rape or Sexual Violence: Do not graphically portray rape, sexual assault, or other forms of sexual violence.
  3. Violence Against Children: Violence involving minors may exist within the setting or a character's history, but do not portray severe violence, abuse, or suffering involving children graphically in roleplay.
  4. Underage Marriage: Political marriages and betrothals involving minors may exist in the setting. Their existence is not prohibited, but all other Mature Content rules still apply.
  5. Arranged Marriages: Arranged marriages, including Aereth's Sword Marriages, are permitted. However, they do not exempt a scene from the prohibition against graphic non-consensual sexual content.

The Game Manager says, "When in doubt, fade to black."

Chapter 2: Code of Conduct https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/2/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/2/ Thu, 06 Aug 2026 21:10:14 +0000 Our Code of Conduct includes a zero-tolerance policy.

  1. Treat all members kindly and respectfully.
  2. Remember that a character's beliefs, actions, and morality do not necessarily reflect those of their player.
  3. Harassment or bullying will result in an immediate ban.
  4. Handle disagreements calmly, maturely, and privately. Do not bring player disputes into public Discord channels or the RPG forums.
  5. Do not use your character to retaliate against another player or carry OOC disagreements into the game. Character contention must remain IC. If you have a problem with another player, address it privately and OOC or bring it to a Game Manager.
  6. Do not alter another writer's contributions to a post without their permission.

Chapter 1: Aereth vs. The Real World https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/1/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-rule-book/chapter/1/ Thu, 06 Aug 2026 21:09:56 +0000 Foreword

Let's get this out of the way so it doesn't have to be repeated elsewhere.

Aereth is a collaborative storytelling roleplaying game (RPG) set in a fictional world inspired by fantasy and real-world history. Its cultures, religions, politics, characters, and events do not represent the personal beliefs or opinions of its players or Game Managers.

Aereth is Switzerland when it comes to members' gender, sexual orientation, skin color, religion, politics, pronouns, and other real-world matters. We simply ask that everyone treat one another with courtesy and respect.

You may list your preferred pronouns in your OOC profile, but other members may not always see them.

If you're looking for reasons to get your knickers in a twist, Aereth may not be the RPG for you!

Aereth Is Not Medieval Earth

Aereth loosely resembles Earth's medieval period, but Aereth is not Earth.

Its governments, cultures, technology, morality, and social attitudes may resemble different historical periods or depart from them entirely. Players are welcome to write characters with more historically medieval attitudes, but this is not required.

Please don't contact Game Managers (GMs) simply because something wouldn't have happened on medieval Earth. It might happen on Aereth.
