Ynys Wydrin — The Isle of Glass

The Sanctuary

The heart of the Order is Ynys Wydrin, the Isle of Glass, an island Sanctuary within Lake Jahassa. The island lies within the immense caldera of the dormant Jahassa supervolcano, whose last eruption predates the human settlement of Brydd but remains within the memory and traditions of the Elder Races.

Jahassa is dormant, not extinct. Residual volcanic heat still moves through fractures, ancient lava tubes, underground waterways, and hydrothermal systems beneath the lake and island.

A Place Made for Healing

Ynys Wydrin is rich in obsidian, hot mineral springs, clean spring water, and fertile volcanic soils. The Sisters cultivate extensive medicinal gardens and use the island's geothermal heat for their hospital wards, baths, kitchens, laundries, and residences. Heated water and hypocaust or hydrothermal systems provide warmth and support the sanitation required by medical work.

The island's exceptionally fine obsidian is highly valued for medical and surgical implements because it can take an extraordinarily keen edge. The Sisters control its careful extraction, use it for their own instruments, and sell surplus glass and finished implements. This trade provides the Order with a dependable source of income independent of Church support.

The Floating Isle

Ynys Wydrin is famous for dense lake fogs and unusual mirages produced by the meeting of lake water, geothermal warmth, and layers of air at different temperatures. At times the island disappears completely; at others its upper slopes and buildings seem to float above the lake or hang within the clouds.

These natural phenomena have surrounded the Isle of Glass with centuries of legend. Some believe Ynys Wydrin reveals itself only when it wishes to be found. Others regard its strange appearances as evidence that the Sisters enjoy the special grace of Ceros.
