The Church of Ceros points to the Sisters as one of the clearest expressions of mercy within the Faith. Temples commonly support their local hospices, and priests may speak of the Sisters' work as carrying the blessing and grace of Ceros.

An Independent Conscience

The Sisters themselves are less concerned with claiming credit than with relieving suffering. Their long history, right of Sanctuary, independent income, and public trust give the Order room to follow its own conscience even when Church politics become difficult.

A Sister faced with an injured person does not first conduct an inquiry into ancestry, doctrine, or suspected magic. She treats the patient. Questions, if they are necessary at all, may wait until afterward.

Chapter 7: Remembrance and the Bereaved https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/7/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/7/ Wed, 19 Aug 2026 15:50:35 +0000 The Necropoli

Necropoli are communal places of remembrance containing niches for urns and memorials rather than vast fields of individual graves. They are intended to remain places for the living: orderly, peaceful, and dignified rather than forbidding cities of the dead.

Portraits of Remembrance

Artists associated with or commissioned through the Sisters may create memorial portraits of the deceased. Displayed near an urn or memorial niche, a portrait allows later generations to remember a face without requiring a grave and monument for every ancestor.

Care for Those Left Behind

The Sisters' work does not end with cremation. They counsel the bereaved, sit with families in grief, and help communities return to ordinary life without demanding that sorrow follow a prescribed timetable or manner.

For many Aerethians, a Sister of Silence is the woman who arrives during illness or catastrophe, does the next necessary thing, and remains until her help is no longer needed.

The Sisters wash, prepare, and tend the deceased before formal rites of remembrance and final disposition. Their methods preserve dignity and allow distant family or necessary observances time to be completed.

Preservation

The Order possesses old practical methods capable of slowing the visible effects and odors of decay for a limited time. These techniques are closely held within the Sisterhood and are used in service of families and the dead rather than as a separate magical art.

Cremation

Cremation is the customary final disposition among Cerosian communities. Ashes may be kept in family vaults, private memorial spaces, or public Necropoli. Noble Houses often maintain ancestral vaults, while communal memorial places serve those without private family holdings.

Valuable possessions ordinarily pass to family or heirs rather than being destroyed with the body, although small personal tokens may accompany the deceased according to family custom.

Chapter 5: Mercy at the End of Life https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/5/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/5/ Wed, 19 Aug 2026 15:50:35 +0000 The Dying

The Sisters remain with patients when medicine can no longer cure them. They ease pain, provide comfort, help families through the final hours, and protect the dignity and wishes of the dying wherever circumstances allow.

The Last Mercy

When a patient is beyond reasonable hope of recovery and faces only a prolonged and terrible death, the Sisters' faith permits them to assist that person in passing gently and with dignity. The choice belongs to a lucid patient whenever possible, and the act is treated as a solemn mercy rather than convenience, punishment, or judgment upon the value of a life.

The Sisters do not hasten death merely because a patient is difficult to treat, disabled, elderly, or burdensome to others. Their purpose is to relieve unavoidable suffering when healing has truly failed.

The Church tolerates this ancient practice and publicly associates the Sisters with Cerosian mercy, though the Order's authority in such matters rests heavily upon its own traditions and the trust it has earned over generations.

Chapter 4: The Glassway and the Right of Sanctuary https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/4/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/4/ Wed, 19 Aug 2026 15:50:35 +0000 The Vanishing Road

An ancient causeway known as the Glassway connects Ynys Wydrin to the nearby shore. It is ordinarily submerged, but changes in the local water level periodically expose the dark stone road. The fluctuations are influenced by the complex underground waterways, reservoirs, and old volcanic channels beneath the Jahassa caldera.

The Sisters know the rhythms and signs of their waters well, although the Glassway has never lost its air of mystery. Among the Faithful, a popular belief holds that Ceros reveals the road when the Sisters have need of it — a sign of his grace upon their good works.

Free Passage

Those who come peacefully to seek the Sisters, visit patients, bring supplies, study, or offer aid are granted free and safe passage to Ynys Wydrin. The Sisters maintain small boats when the Glassway is submerged, so access to medical care does not depend upon the causeway appearing.

The Sisters' Sanctuary

Ynys Wydrin is governed by an ancient right of Sanctuary. Church and secular authorities may visit, but they enter as guests and may not interfere with the Sisters' care or remove a person accepted into Sanctuary without the Order's consent.

The Church publicly recognizes this independence and presents the Sisters' work as blessed by Ceros. Whatever private tensions have existed across the centuries, the Sisters' reputation, ancient rights, practical importance, and independent resources have made their Sanctuary difficult to challenge and costly to oppose.

Chapter 3: Ynys Wydrin — The Isle of Glass https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/3/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/3/ Wed, 19 Aug 2026 15:50:35 +0000 The Sanctuary

The heart of the Order is Ynys Wydrin, the Isle of Glass, an island Sanctuary within Lake Jahassa. The island lies within the immense caldera of the dormant Jahassa supervolcano, whose last eruption predates the human settlement of Brydd but remains within the memory and traditions of the Elder Races.

Jahassa is dormant, not extinct. Residual volcanic heat still moves through fractures, ancient lava tubes, underground waterways, and hydrothermal systems beneath the lake and island.

A Place Made for Healing

Ynys Wydrin is rich in obsidian, hot mineral springs, clean spring water, and fertile volcanic soils. The Sisters cultivate extensive medicinal gardens and use the island's geothermal heat for their hospital wards, baths, kitchens, laundries, and residences. Heated water and hypocaust or hydrothermal systems provide warmth and support the sanitation required by medical work.

The island's exceptionally fine obsidian is highly valued for medical and surgical implements because it can take an extraordinarily keen edge. The Sisters control its careful extraction, use it for their own instruments, and sell surplus glass and finished implements. This trade provides the Order with a dependable source of income independent of Church support.

The Floating Isle

Ynys Wydrin is famous for dense lake fogs and unusual mirages produced by the meeting of lake water, geothermal warmth, and layers of air at different temperatures. At times the island disappears completely; at others its upper slopes and buildings seem to float above the lake or hang within the clouds.

These natural phenomena have surrounded the Isle of Glass with centuries of legend. Some believe Ynys Wydrin reveals itself only when it wishes to be found. Others regard its strange appearances as evidence that the Sisters enjoy the special grace of Ceros.

Chapter 2: Healcraft and Medicine https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/2/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/2/ Wed, 19 Aug 2026 15:50:35 +0000 The Common Work

Most of the Sisters' healing is learned skill. Their training includes cleaning and dressing wounds, stitching where necessary, splinting and setting uncomplicated fractures, treating burns, preparing medicines and poultices, nursing fevers and common illnesses, assisting with childbirth when needed, recognizing infection, and knowing when an injury or disease exceeds their ability.

A Sister's knowledge is practical and cumulative. Experience is valued as highly as books, and local Sisters learn the ailments, herbs, hazards, and seasonal illnesses of the communities they serve.

Gifted Healers

A minority of Sisters possess genuine magical healing ability. Such Gifts arise from Sídhe blood somewhere in the healer's ancestry. The connection may be obvious, or it may lie so far back in a family line that the Sister herself has no knowledge of it.

Gifted healing supplements rather than replaces medicine. A Gifted Sister still cleans a wound, sets a broken bone, controls bleeding, and tends the patient properly. Her Gift may strengthen natural healing, ease pain, resist infection, or stabilize an injury that ordinary healcraft alone might not overcome.

On rare occasions a Sídhe woman herself may choose the Sisters' vocation and join the Order. The Sisters judge such women by their work and conduct rather than by blood.

Care Without a Test of Faith

The Sisters do not require a patient to prove devotion to Ceros before receiving care. Those who come peacefully seeking help are treated according to need and the Sisters' ability.

Hospices and Hospitals

Wherever possible, a Cerosian temple maintains or supports a hospice staffed by the Sisters. Even a small hamlet may have a modest treatment room, a few beds, medicine stores, and one or more Sisters serving the surrounding countryside.

Larger towns maintain substantial hospices with several Sisters, while cities may support full hospitals capable of serious wound care, prolonged nursing, difficult illnesses, training, and the Order's traditional care of the dying and dead.

Supporting the Work

Local houses help support themselves by preparing and selling medicines, salves, washes, poultices, and other useful remedies at markets. Many are sold for little more than pennies so that ordinary families can afford them.

Those able to pay for treatment may do so; wealthier patrons often donate more, and grateful families sometimes leave gifts or bequests. Those who have nothing are still treated. Temples contribute buildings, supplies, land, or funds, while the Sisters' own resources help preserve the Order's independence.

Chapter 1: Overview & Play https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/1/ https://www.aereth.site/story/the-sisters-of-silence/chapter/1/ Wed, 19 Aug 2026 15:50:35 +0000 Overview

The Sisters of Silence are a healing and charitable order associated with the Church of Ceros. Their work follows the whole course of suffering: they tend illness and injury, nurse the recovering, comfort the dying, care for the dead, and remain with the bereaved afterward.

Although the Church publicly embraces the Sisters as an expression of Cerosian mercy, the Order possesses old traditions, independent resources, and a strong identity of its own. The Sisters are widely loved because their first concern is simple: relieve suffering where they find it.

Most Sisters are skilled practitioners of ordinary healcraft rather than supernatural healers. They learn medicine, nursing, herbs, wound care, bone-setting, and the treatment of common illnesses. Their hospitals and hospices make practical care available even to people who may never see a Magister physician or Sídhe healer.

Playing a Sister

A Sister may be devoutly Cerosian, quietly questioning, practical, scholarly, warm, stern, humorous, or reserved. She may marry, remain single, have children, or build a family in whatever manner is acceptable to her culture and circumstances. Sister is a vocation and office, not a vow of celibacy or withdrawal from ordinary life.

What unites the Order is service: care for the sick and injured, dignity for the dying and dead, and compassion for those left behind. The Sisters are not inquisitors, judges of doctrine, or agents of punishment.
