Overview

In short, the Guardians of the Temple are Aereth’s version of the Knights Templars. They are not the Church’s military police force or inquisitors. The Cardinal of D’Hassa has his own secret organization to carry out those tasks.

The Guardians of the Temple are the martial orders of the Church of Ceros, devoted to the defense of the Faith, its people, and the Realm of Light. Commonly called Templars, they are divided into the Knights Guardian and Dames Guardian, parallel orders whose members share the same essential purpose, standards, and responsibilities.

Guardians are not ordinary soldiers in Church colors. They undergo years of demanding spiritual, martial, and practical training and are expected to exercise judgment as well as courage. Their service may place them beside priests and pilgrims, on dangerous roads, in troubled communities, or wherever the Church believes the Faithful require protection.

Most Guardians possess no supernatural gifts at all. Rarely, a Guardian or prospective Guardian experiences the Calling, an unusual connection to the Light that carries an inherent resistance to Shadow Corruption and the potential to manifest sacred gifts known as Blessings.
